Earth Observation & TIGER
1. What can Earth Observation do?
Space-based information has
received a considerable recognition during the past years. In the last decades space-borne technology
has proved itself a reliable and advanced source of information for water resources management.
Therefore, earth observation data allows institutions and water authorities to detect, evaluate and
monitor the water quality and dynamics in quantity on a local, regional and national scale.
Major advantages of satellite-based data and information for water resources management are:
- Provide a homogeneous overview of large regions, facilitating integration of information from local to national to trans-boundary scale
- Enable conditions in remote, inaccessable or insecure areas to be monitored
- Provision of neutral information for integrated management of Africa's transboundary ground and surface water
- Continuous acquisition of various hydro-geological variables and bio-physical parameters involved in the water cycle

2. Limitations
- Ground truth recquired for calibration, consolidation and validation
- Data assimilation recquired - combination with ancillary data / GIS
